Russian Consulate to town
By Adrian L Marnewick

The Songmakers' Guild, sponsored by EvaluNet, presented a delightful performance of Russian Rarities to a very enthusiastic audience including guests of honour from the Russian Consulate in Cape Town. The performance included the highly renowned Sabina Mossolow (soprano), Violina Anguelov (mezzo soprano) and Peter Valentovic on the piano.

Born in Namibia of Russian-German parentage, soprano Sabina Mossolow holds a master's degree in music and an honours degree in journalism from the University of Stellenbosch, where she studied singing under Nellie du Toit.

Violina Anguelov (mezzo-soprano) was born in Bulgaria. She obtained her Performer's Diploma in Opera with distinction as well as Honours Degree in Singing (First Class) from the University of Cape Town under voice teacher Sarita Stern.

Cape Town Opera's chorus master since 2004, Peter Valentovic hails from Bratislava, Slovakia. Despite his young age he has a considerable repertoire as conductor, musical coach and pianist at his finger tips. He studied conducting, choral conducting and vocal coaching at the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Vienna and the Conservatoire National Superiéur de musique et de danse in Paris and has been awarded several prizes and bursaries.

Classic musical items selected by the performers included work of Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich, Rimski-Korsakov, Rachmaninov and Prokofiev.
